Chameleon diamonds are one of the rarest and strangest characters in the diamond world — and yes, they're named after the lizard for good reason. Left in the dark for a few days, a chameleon diamond will shift from a muted grayish-green or olive hue to a warm yellow, and if you gently heat it (even just under a lamp), it changes again right before your eyes. Give it some time back in daylight, and it slowly reverts to its original color, ready to repeat the trick all over again.

Gemologists believe this color-changing act comes down to trace amounts of hydrogen and nitrogen locked inside the crystal structure, though the exact mechanism is still something of a scientific mystery.
